1. Explore the Historic City Centre

Start your adventure in Harlingen by exploring the picturesque streets of the historic city centre. Admire the beautiful 17th-century canal houses along the Noorderhaven and Zuiderhaven and don’t forget to take a stroll along the quaint little canal, the Zoutsloot.

2. Get on the Water

Being the only seaport town in Friesland, Harlingen offers plenty of opportunities to get out on the water. Take a scenic boat tour through the old town, or rent a boat from boat rental service "Ouwe Seun," soak up the maritime atmosphere and admire the historic buildings. Embark on a Wadden Sea excursion to the sandbanks, spot seals and enjoy the sea breeze. Or, board one of the sailing ships of the Brown Fleet for a day out on the Wadden!

3. Relax on Harlingen Beach

At just a short walk from the city centre, you will find Harlingen’s small, clean and quiet beach. It’s a great place to relax - under the watchful eye of the Stone Man ‘Caspar di Robles’. Enjoy the salty sea air, the sun, build sandcastles or take a refreshing dip in the sea when the tide is high. Stroll along the beach, feel the surf between your toes, or fly a kite to your heart's content. During the summer months, two floating piers (also known as pontoons) up to 200 meters long and 3 meters wide are anchored near the high-tide line at Harlingen Beach. After all that relaxation, Strandpaviljoen ’t Zilt is a nice place to grab a bite. Once you've worked up an appetite, head over to Beach Pavilion 't Zilt for a delicious meal.

4. Walk on the Piers

"Pierewaaien" means taking a leisurely stroll along the Southern or Northern Pier, enjoying the fresh sea air. It’s a perfect place to unwind, soak up the views of the Wadden Sea, and listen to the calming sound of seagulls. Put on your walking shoes, bring binoculars, and discover the unique flora and fauna of this World Heritage area. The Wadden Islands are visible on the horizon, there is the rhythmic lapping of the water on the left and right of you, and boats are coming and going. Here, you’ll see the Brown Fleet ships set sail and the ferries from Vlieland and Terschelling  making their way back to the harbour.

6. Visit the Hannemahuis

If you are interested in Harlingen’s rich history, a visit to the Hannemahuis Museum is a must. Expect to see everything from antique grandfather clocks to stunning blue and white pottery. Don’t miss Baur’s art gallery, established in 1814, and Sybrandt Talma's gin distillery. 8. Harlingen, a True Port Town

In Harlingen, you can explore several harbours, including the Noorderhaven, Zuiderhaven, Oude Buitenhaven, Jachthaven, Vissershaven, and Industriehaven. One of the nicest places is the Nieuwe Willemshaven, home to Brewery Het Brouwdok and Restaurant Jonas. The vibrant marina of Harlingen Watersport Association is also a great spot. The tidal harbours of Harlingen are truly unique. Take a relaxing walk along the harbour or savour a meal at one of the many great restaurants. Recommended spots are ‘t Havenmantsje, Zeezicht, Anna Casparii, and Down & Up, all offering great views of the bobbing boats, sunset, and the Grote Sluis (‘Great Lock’).

9. Stroll Along the Seawall

Harlingen’s seawall is a real eye-catcher! With its stunning sea views, it's the perfect place to unwind or take a leisurely stroll at sunset. The seawall protects residents from high water levels, just like a dike does, safeguarding Harlingen from potential storm surges.

10. Visit the Harlingen Pottery and Tile Factory

The Harlingen Pottery and Tile Factory, a true family business, is the last remaining company in the Netherlands to produce handmade earthenware and tiles using traditional methods. This centuries-old craft has been practiced in Harlingen since 1598, employing the unique tin glaze technique. The factory makes a wide range of ceramic products, from classic to modern designs. They specialize in restoring, preserving, completing, or recreating tiles, tableaux and architectural ceramics of any style.
