Windsurfing in Harlingen

Strong winds, a salty Wadden Sea and a wide beach—Harlingen is the perfect place for windsurfing. Feel the power of the wind as you surf along the Harlingen coast.

A Unique Beach

Unlike other beaches in Friesland, Harlingen is unique. This historic seaport town is located right on the Wadden Sea, meaning that the tides impact the water levels. Additionally, the beach is very wide, making it easy to set up your windsurfing equipment. It’s an ideal, peaceful spot for advanced windsurfers.

Important Information

Windsurfing in the Wadden Sea is amazing, but there are a few things you need to keep in mind. The seawater can feel colder than other waters in Friesland. The water level is another factor to consider, as it changes with the tides. This means you can’t go into the water at all times of the day. Harlingen has a wild and rugged feel to it, and there's a good reason for that. With strong winds, you can get big waves or strong currents. Windsurfing in Harlingen is a must for adrenaline junkies, but less suitable for beginners. Please note that between 1 April and 31 August you must stay between the yellow buoys. These buoys are specifically placed for wind- and kitesurfers.

Parking near the Beach

The Westerzeedijk parking lot is located near Harlingen beach, so you only have to walk a short distance with your windsurfing gear. Once you’ve parked, take the stairs and walk to the other side of the dike. Look for the yellow buoys, so that after rigging your sail, you can easily get into the water.
