Dijktrappen

At the foot of the Westerzeedijk in Harlingen, next to the iconic Stenen Man monument, you’ll find the new Dijktrappen: a place to pause and take in your surroundings. The steps not only connect the land with the sea, but also invite you to sit, meet others and enjoy the view.

Enjoy the panoramic views
With views of the Wadden Sea, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, on one side and the Frisian landscape on the other, this is the perfect place to watch the sun rise or slowly set. A moment of tranquillity on the highest dike along the Wadden Sea – a little moment of happiness with a magnificent view.

The dike’s crest heights
The years shown on the steps have a meaning: they indicate the height of the dike’s crest at different points in history. As you climb the steps, you can see how the dike was gradually raised over the centuries to protect the land behind it.
